At least 20 people, mostly children, have died of a mysterious disease since December in a village in the center of the West African country of Ivory Coast. This is evidenced by a new balance obtained by the French news agency AFP from local sources.
“Until January 26, we had twelve deaths. On Thursday, the death toll rose to 20, including two adults,” while until then “no adults were injured,” said Paul Kouassi, president of the youth association in the village of Kpo Kahankro, which is about 20 kilometers from the town of Buake. .. The balance was also confirmed by other villagers.
Kouasi added that the adult victims were two women, aged 60 and 70. They died at Bouake hospital “after showing the same symptoms as the first victims”, namely vomiting and diarrhoea.
By the way, 33 other villagers were recently hospitalized with similar symptoms.
After the first casualties, several ministers have already arrived in the village to assess the situation on the spot. It remains to wait for the results of the analyzes that should clarify what is the matter. Meanwhile, the villagers themselves believe that witchcraft is involved.
