Northwest Iran, not far from the border with Turkey, was hit by a strong earthquake on Saturday evening, killing at least two people. According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6. Local media and the American institute USGS spoke of 5.9 at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Buildings were damaged in dozens of cities. At least 440 people were injured.
Rescue workers are on their way to the affected area, and surrounding hospitals have been alerted. The winter weather can complicate the relief work. It snows in many places in the region and the temperature drops well below freezing at night. The electricity also went out here and there.
An earthquake in north-west Iran injured 120 people last week.
