For Casper Ruud (ATP 3), the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, ended after the second round. The second seeded Norwegian lost to the American Jenson Brooksby (ATP 39) in four sets: 6: 3, 7: 5, 6: 7 (4/7) and 6: 2. The party lasted almost four hours.
With the American Taylor Fritz (ATP 9), the eighth seed, another high-ranking tennis player died. In the second round he was no match for the Australian Alexei Popyrin (ATP 113) and went down after a five in over four hours: 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/2), 6-4, 6 -7 (6/8) and 6-2.
The German Alexander Zverev (ATP 13) was defeated as the twelfth seed with 6: 7 (1/7), 6: 4, 6: 3 and 6: 2 the American lucky loser Michael Mmoh (ATP 107). The game lasted 3 hours and 28 minutes. Zverev, a semi-finalist in Melbourne in 2020, was playing his first Grand Slam since suffering a serious ankle injury in last year’s Roland Garros semi-final. Mmoh got into the main draw thanks to the last minute exit of David Goffin with stomach flu the night before his first game.
