On Friday, a 24-hour strike in Portugal stopped garbage collection, the work of schools, hospitals and financial services. Activists demand an “immediate increase in salaries”, the trade unions report.
“There is general discontent,” said union activist Sebastiao Santana. He calls on the government to “immediately give answers.”
The strikers also want to curb rising commodity prices and a tax on the windfall profits of big companies.
A national demonstration is also planned for Saturday afternoon in Lisbon, where demonstrators will demand a general increase in wages and pensions in Portugal.
