Tourists and residents of Venice were stunned on Sunday when the water of the famous Grand Canal near the Rialto Bridge suddenly turned fluorescent green. The Italian police is investigating the reason for the color change.
Firefighters and the environmental service took samples for examination. The prefect of Venice called an emergency meeting with the police. According to media reports, the authorities do not consider the liquid dangerous.
In 1968, an Argentinian artist painted the water of the city’s main canal green to draw attention to water pollution. Recently, environmentalists turned the water of the Trevi Fountain in Rome black in protest against the use of fossil fuels. But so far no group has claimed responsibility for the discoloration in Venice.
