23 Russian billionaires from the list of the 500 richest people in the world lost 67 billion dollars after a year of war, or a fifth of their combined fortune.
On February 23, 2022, the day before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the fortunes of the 23 richest Russians amounted to $339 billion. A drop of 20 percent after a year is four times the average loss of other members of Bloomberg’s wealthiest list.
Oleksiy Mordashev, the owner of the steel giant Severstal, lost the most. His fortune fell by $6.7 billion after the Russian invasion. With a fortune estimated at $19.8 billion, he remains the fourth richest Russian.
Other wealthy Russians saw their fortunes rise again. For example, Andriy Guriev earned $2.1 billion after the war thanks to an increase in the share of the large fertilizer producer PhosAgro. Guryev is the founder and the largest shareholder of the company.
Overall, the impact of American, British and European sanctions on the richest Russians also appears to be relative. For example, the lowest point of losses was only a few weeks after the raid, on March 9. The loss then amounted to 92 billion dollars.
