Party in the Tour of San Juan. Or at least in the Soudal-Quick.Step hotel, because Remco Evenepoel is celebrating his 23rd birthday today. And of course that includes a gift.
The sports editors of HLN, Het Laatste Nieuws and VTM gave Remco Evenepoel in Argentina a bag of M&Ms, his ‘guilty pleasure’. “It might be a bit difficult for breakfast, but there will definitely be a few more tonight,” laughs the birthday boy. “Thank you.” It’s not possible to throw a party, because of course there are still races to be had. “But we know that this is a good ‘cream shop’. That will happen tonight.”
In the fourth stage of the Tour of San Juan today (tonight Belgian time) there is a climb in the middle. Will Evenepoel treat himself to another birthday present there? “Gosh, it’s still a long time after that ascension. It might be a bit off the beaten track, but I don’t think we’ll finish with a very small group. Maybe it can be done, but it will be difficult.”
