Yanina Wickmayer has not missed a return to the WTA circuit. Our compatriots soon fought for the location of the main draw in Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament this year.

After the arrival of his eldest daughter in April last year, Yanina Wickmayer removed the tennis racket from the closet in February. At the ITF tournament, she was able to regain the rhythm of her match.

Earlier this month she re-challenged for the first time at the WTA level in Rosmalen, but was killed by qualification. She participated in her third Grand Slam tournament this year, the main draw at Wimbledon.

Wickmayer defeated Austria’s Julia Grabner, Bulgaria’s Isabella Sinikova, and South Korea’s Sujeongchan two sets in a row. She can prepare for the 13th Wimbledon.

Prior to her maternity leave, Wickmayer was there continuously from 2008 to 2019. In 2011, she advanced to the eighth final. In 2009, she reached the semi-finals at the US Open. This is the best result in a Grand Slam tournament.

Wickmayer will accompany Elise Mertens (WTA 30), Alison van Utvank (WTA 46), Maryna Zanevska (WTA 68) and Greet Minnen (WTA 89) on the main draw. Kirsten Flipkens also plays at the All England Club, thanks to his protected rankings. Isarimbona Venture did not exceed the qualification.

Wickmayer: “This makes a lot of sense to me.”

For Wickmayer, it’s the first Grand Slam tournament since she became a mother.

“This was a really good race and it was the best of the three in qualifying,” she later said. “I feel growing. It’s fun. I was positive today and always made the right choice. I got into the track and the net well and that made all the difference.”

The 32-year-old Wickmayer, a semi-finalist at the 2009 US Open, will make his 13th appearance in London. “It’s my first Grand Slam since becoming her mother, and it makes it much more special,” she admitted.

“This makes a lot of sense to me. I’m very proud of the way I’ve traveled to get here now. It wasn’t a pointless feat. I started over.”
