He’s best known as the man who directs psychological thriller films with supernatural plots, but M. Night Shyamalan effortlessly applies this trick to the small screen as well. For Apple TV+ he directed Servant, a – yes – psychological thriller with a supernatural twist.
The story of Servant revolves around married couple Dorothy (Lauren Ambrose) and Sean Turner (Toby Kebbell). A young and wealthy couple who are trying to get back on their feet after the death of their newborn son Jericho. To channel her grief, Dorothy has brought a lifelike doll to her home – to help her say goodbye to her deceased child. But Dorothy is so struggling with her loss that she takes this toy as the real thing. Eventually, this leads to her hiring a nanny – and instantly bringing an uncanny, supernatural force into her home. According to critics, Servant is one of the most alienating and compelling horror series right now, not to mention the extra for Harry Potter fans. For example, none other than Rupert “Ron Weasley” Grint makes an appearance as Julian, Dorothy’s brother. Whether Voldemort had anything to do with it, we’ll let you find out for yourself.
Servant is now available to watch on Apple TV+.
