The earthquake caused minor damage. Therefore, seismologists believe that earthquakes of magnitude 5.4 to 6.0 can cause only minor damage to well-designed buildings. Buildings that are in poor condition can be seriously damaged.
The epicenter of this earthquake was located in the Kozan area, 64 kilometers from Adana, the capital of the province of the same name, reports the Istanbul Kandilli Observatory. According to the US Seismological Institute (USGS), this earthquake occurred at 8:44 am local time (7:44 am Belgium time) at a depth of 10 kilometers. The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) calls the depth 12 kilometers.
The quake comes less than six months after Turkey and Syria were hit by earthquakes that killed more than 50,000 people. Tens of thousands of buildings were destroyed. Many of those damaged buildings have not yet been demolished. Orhan Tatar, head of the risk reduction department of the Turkish disaster management agency AFAD, urges residents of the affected area to stay away from damaged buildings.
