Thomas Vermaelen (37) has nothing against the post of technical director at the Belgian Football Association. That’s what he says before the start of the Golden Shoe Gala.
“If the union asks me, who knows,” says Vermaelen, who worked as an assistant under ex-national coach Roberto Martínez. “At the moment I’m flexible because I’m not employed anywhere and therefore free. I can spend a lot of time with my wife and children. I’ll see what comes my way, I’m not against anything.”
Frank Vercauteren is the main candidate for the position of Technical Director. As a plan B, the Football Association is looking at a younger profile – such as Vermaelen and Timmy Simons.
And what does Vermaelen know about the search for a new national coach? “It’s very difficult for me to say. I know very little as I am no longer employed by the Football Association.”
