The foo樂威壯
tball association is in the final stretch of the search for a new national coach for the Red Devils. Stressed in the picture: Domenico Tedesco (37). A young, data-crazy German who won the cup with RB Leipzig last year.
Frank Vercauteren will almost certainly become Technical Director of the Football Association. An experienced hand in the craft. The task force, which includes national boss Peter Bossaert, Bart Verhaeghe (Club Brugge), Sven Jaecques (Antwerp) and Pierre Locht (Standard), thinks it’s a good idea to combine so much experience with a young national coach.
In this search they ended up with Domenico Tedesco, among others. An Italian German of almost 37 years. Squeaky for a coach. Despite his young age, he already has an impressive CV. At the age of 32 he took over at the German second division club Aue, who would almost certainly be relegated. He kept the club in the second Bundesliga. He then led a drifting Schalke 04 into the Champions League – only to be sidelined the following season after a 7-0 defeat by Manchester City.
At Spartak Moscow (2019-2021) he played at the top in Russia but decided to return to Germany due to the pandemic. There he guided RB Leipzig from mid-tier to a place in the Champions League, the semi-finals of the Europa League and a cup win last season. Despite these good performances, Leipzig released him in September 2022 after a disappointing start to the competition.
Tedesco meets many of the union’s criteria. Tedesco belongs to a talented new generation of “laptop coaches” – coaches obsessed with data and tactics. He stands for energetic football and dares to adapt. At Schalke 04, his substitutions turned a 4-0 deficit against Dortmund into a 4-4 draw. He speaks German, English, Italian, Spanish and Russian.
Tedesco graduated from the renowned Hennes Weisweiler Trainer Academy together with Julian Nagelsmann. There he even scored more points than his compatriot, who is now the coach of FC Bayern Munich. Nagelsmann then gave Tedesco the opportunity to learn the trade with Hoffenheim’s youth teams.
Despite the German cup victory, Tedesco is not yet a “series winner”, as the task force described the ideal national coach. But the corresponding profiles are almost all too expensive for a small football association like the KBVB. Tedesco can revive his career with the Red Devils. Inquiries in his environment show us that the German is delighted that his name is being mentioned as the Red Devils’ national coaching candidate. Meanwhile, the Football Association are hoping to tie the knot next week. With Domenico Tedesco as an important candidate.
