Prominent American far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones must pay an additional $45 million in fines to the parents of children killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. It was decided by a jury in Texas. On Thursday, Jones also sentenced Jones to pay over his $4 million in damages.
The influential Jones has repeatedly dismissed the shootings as hoaxes in recent years on his information channel “InfoWars” and on his popular podcast “The Alex Jones Show.” The event was allegedly staged to discredit the gun control lobby. He was on trial in Texas after a couple who lost their child to the shooting took him to court.
A jury had already ordered him to pay $4.1 million in damages on Thursday. In total, Jones will have nearly $50 million he has to dam up. The couple had demanded $150 million.
Twenty children and six adults were killed in a shooting in New Jersey. The perpetrator was a young man with a semi-automatic rifle. Jones will soon have to answer two more lawsuits about his statements about the deadly shooting.
